How Memories can Help Build Confidence: A Personal Journey

Today, I want to share an experience that unfolded during a recent somatic practice. The 10-minute breathing practice was layered with intention. The intention of the practice was to tap into a memory—a moment of past success or completion—and embody the confidence and success it represents.

A Journey Begins
With the intention set, our group began breathing what's called a "Halo Breath" pattern. That's in through the nose and out through the mouth.

As I slowly explored raising my hands straight up into the air. I found myself deeply immersed in the subtle movement. What began as a simple action evolved into something profound. Vivid visuals and sensations flowed through my awareness, transforming the exercise into a sensory-rich experience of joy and confidence.

A Memory Revisited
As I moved my arms up, memories flooded in. I was transported back to my childhood, around the age of 6 or 7, when I used to play ringette—a sport similar to ice hockey for girls. The memory was vivid: the thrill of scoring a goal. The moment the ring hit the net there was a rush of excitement. I shot my arm up into the air, shouting "YAYYY!! WOOOOHOOOO!! Yesss!!" The feeling of confidence echoed in my body. Pure joy!

The Power of Teamwork
What made the moment even more special was the celebrations shared with my teammates. Each member of the team joined in, offering high fives and crashing hugs. In that moment, it felt like everyone who attended the game played a part in the goal—each person contributing an assist in their own way.

The Intersection of Past and Present
This somatic practice allowed me to embody the confidence and success of my past self, bringing those feelings into the present. It served as a reminder that our past experiences shape us, and we can draw strength from them. Revisiting this memory, I was able to borrow the confidence and successes from my younger self and apply it to my current journey.

Reflections on the Memory
It wasn't just about reliving the moments of victory on the ice; it was about embodying the confidence and success that comes from true connection and support. It was about recognizing that success isn't achieved in isolation—it's a collaborative effort, with each person is playing a vital role.

Key Take Away

Harnessing the Power of Somatic Practices: Somatic Practices rooted in what the body experiences can serve as a powerful tool to tap into past memories and embody the confidence they represent.
By tapping into borrowed memories— through intentional movement and breath, we can channel the energy of those moments, allowing them to infuse every aspect of our being.
